Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
This is what the LORD says: 'You must not go to war or fight against your fellow Israelites. Every person should go back home, because I have caused this situation to happen.' So they listened to what the LORD said and turned back instead of attacking Jeroboam.
God told His people not to fight against each other in a civil war, and they obeyed Him by going home peacefully.
📚 Historical Context
This occurred after King Solomon's death when the united kingdom of Israel split in two. Rehoboam ruled the southern kingdom (Judah) while Jeroboam ruled the northern kingdom (Israel). When Rehoboam prepared to attack the north to reunite the kingdom by force, God sent the prophet Shemaiah to stop the civil war.
