So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.
So David took the spear and the water jug from beside Saul's head, and he and his men quietly left. No one saw them or knew what happened, and no one woke up, because the LORD had caused them all to fall into a deep sleep.
God caused Saul's entire army to sleep deeply so David could take Saul's spear and water jug as proof he could have killed the king but chose not to.
📚 Historical Context
This occurred while King Saul was pursuing David in the wilderness, trying to kill him out of jealousy. David had already spared Saul's life once before in a cave, and now God provided another opportunity for David to demonstrate his integrity. In ancient times, a king's spear and personal items were symbols of royal authority and power.
