📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of 1 Samuel, King Saul had grown jealous of David, a young shepherd who had become a national hero after defeating the giant Goliath in battle. As a result, Saul promoted David to the position of captain over a thousand soldiers, which was a strategic move to both honor him and keep him at arm's length, potentially exposing him to danger on the battlefield. This decision highlighted the tensions in Saul's court as David's popularity continued to rise among the people.
