Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
So the guilt for their deaths will fall on Joab and his descendants forever. But the LORD will give David, his descendants, his family, and his kingdom peace forever.
This verse is declaring that Joab will bear the consequences of his violent actions, while God promises lasting peace to David's royal line.
📚 Historical Context
This comes from Solomon's execution of Joab, David's military commander who had murdered two innocent men (Abner and Amasa) during David's reign. Solomon was fulfilling his father David's deathbed instructions to bring justice for these unpunished crimes. The ancient concept of blood guilt meant that unavenged murders brought a curse on the land and people.
