Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
So the guilt for their deaths will fall on Joab and his descendants forever. But the LORD will give David, his descendants, his family, and his kingdom peace forever.
This verse is declaring that Joab will bear the consequences of his violent actions, while God promises lasting peace to David's royal line.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, King David is at the end of his life, instructing his son Solomon on how to secure his reign by addressing unresolved issues from David's past. Joab, David's former military commander, had committed murders that brought bloodguilt upon himself, and David orders punishment to ensure this curse does not affect his own family line. This reflects the ancient Israelite understanding that sins could have lasting consequences on descendants, while God's favor could bring enduring peace to the righteous.
