And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
I tore the kingdom away from David's family and gave it to you. But you haven't been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with his whole heart, doing only what I considered right.
God is telling Jeroboam that even though He gave him the kingdom, Jeroboam failed to follow God faithfully like David did.
📚 Historical Context
In the Bible, after King Solomon's death, the kingdom of Israel was divided into two parts due to Solomon's idolatry and the people's dissatisfaction with his son Rehoboam, with Jeroboam rising to lead the northern tribes. God had torn the kingdom from David's dynasty and given ten tribes to Jeroboam as a judgment, expecting him to rule faithfully as David had by obeying God's laws. However, this verse highlights Jeroboam's failure to live up to that standard, as God compares him unfavorably to David.
