And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
The LORD called out to Samuel again. Samuel got up and went to Eli, saying, 'Here I am, because you called me.' But Eli answered, 'I didn't call you, my son. Go back and lie down.'
God is persistently calling young Samuel, but Samuel doesn't yet recognize God's voice and keeps thinking it's his mentor Eli calling him.
📚 Historical Context
This takes place in the tabernacle at Shiloh, where young Samuel was serving under the priest Eli. During this period in Israel's history, direct communication from God was rare, which explains why neither Samuel nor Eli immediately recognized what was happening. Samuel was likely still a child or young teenager at this time.
