And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied to David, 'I know that you are good in my eyes, like an angel of God. But the Philistine commanders have said that you cannot come with us into battle.'
The writer is showing how even though King Achish trusted David completely, the other Philistine leaders refused to let David fight alongside them against Israel.
📚 Historical Context
This occurs during David's time of exile from King Saul, when he had been living among the Philistines for protection. David had been serving Achish, the Philistine king of Gath, and had gained his complete trust through apparent loyalty. However, when the Philistines prepared to fight against Israel (and Saul), the other Philistine commanders didn't trust David's motives.
