And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
Abigail returned home to Nabal and found him throwing a party in his house like a king's banquet. Nabal was in a great mood and very drunk, so she decided not to tell him anything at all until morning came.
Abigail wisely waited until her drunk husband sobered up before delivering important news that would upset him.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of 1 Samuel, David and his men were living as fugitives in the wilderness and had protected Nabal's flocks and shepherds without expecting payment, but Nabal responded with insult and ingratitude when David requested provisions. Abigail, Nabal's wise and resourceful wife, took initiative by preparing gifts for David to avert his planned retaliation against Nabal's household. When she returned home, she encountered Nabal in the midst of a grand feast, where his drunkenness made him unable to handle the serious news she had to share.
