Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
About this temple you are building: if you will follow my laws, carry out my decisions, and obey all my commands by living according to them, then I will keep the promise I made to your father David.
God is telling Solomon that His blessing on the temple depends on Solomon's obedience to God's commands and laws.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is set during the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem by King Solomon, who was building it as a permanent house for God's presence after his father David's reign. God speaks directly to Solomon, warning that His promises to establish the dynasty would only be fulfilled if Solomon remained obedient to God's laws and commandments. This reflects the ongoing covenant theme in Israel's history, where obedience was key to experiencing God's blessings.
