And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
And this is what will happen: whoever escapes death by Hazael's sword will be killed by Jehu, and whoever escapes death by Jehu's sword will be killed by Elisha.
God is telling Elijah that through these three men - Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha - His judgment against the wicked will be complete and inescapable.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes after Elijah's encounter with God at Mount Horeb, where God instructed him to anoint three people: Hazael as king over Syria, Jehu as king over Israel, and Elisha as prophet to succeed Elijah. God was preparing instruments of judgment against the idol worship and corruption that had spread throughout Israel under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel's reign.
