And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
The LORD spoke His word against Baasha and his family through the prophet Jehu, son of Hanani. This judgment came because of all the evil Baasha had done before the LORD, making God angry through his actions and by following the same wicked path as Jeroboam's family. The judgment also came because Baasha had killed Jeroboam.
God delivered judgment against King Baasha through a prophet because Baasha repeated the same sins as the previous king and committed murder to gain power.
📚 Historical Context
During the time of the divided kingdom of Israel, Baasha rose to power by assassinating King Nadab and then perpetuated the idolatrous sins introduced by Jeroboam, which involved leading the people away from true worship of God. This provoked God's anger, as Baasha's actions not only mirrored Jeroboam's rebellion but also included murder and other evils that defied God's commands. Through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani, God delivered a direct message of judgment against Baasha and his household for these transgressions.
