Nevertheless for David’s sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
But because of David, the LORD his God gave him a light in Jerusalem, allowing his son to rule after him and keeping Jerusalem strong.
God is showing mercy and keeping His promises to David's family line, even when David's descendants don't deserve it.
📚 Historical Context
This verse refers to God's covenant promise to King David that his dynasty would continue forever. Even when David's sons and grandsons (like Abijam mentioned in the surrounding verses) were unfaithful to God, the Lord still preserved the royal line in Jerusalem because of His commitment to David. The 'lamp' symbolizes the continuing dynasty and God's presence with David's house.
