And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.
When the prophet who had convinced him to turn back from his journey heard what happened, he said, 'This is the man of God who disobeyed the Lord's command. So the Lord allowed the lion to attack and kill him, just as the Lord had warned him would happen.'
The older prophet recognized that God's judgment fell on the man of God because he disobeyed God's clear instructions, even though he was deceived into disobedience.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of 1 Kings, the kingdom of Israel was divided after Solomon's reign, with King Jeroboam leading the northern tribes into idolatrous worship at sites like Bethel. God sent a prophet from Judah to deliver a warning against Jeroboam's altar, explicitly commanding the prophet not to eat or drink in that place on his return journey. However, the prophet was deceived by an older prophet who lied to him, leading to his disobedience and tragic death as a direct result of ignoring God's word.
