Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.
Here are the places where they lived, throughout their towns within their territory, belonging to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite families, because they received the first portion when the land was divided.
This verse introduces a list of the specific towns and territories that were given to Aaron's descendants (the priests) from the Kohathite family when the Promised Land was divided up.
📚 Historical Context
After the Israelites conquered the Promised Land under Joshua, the territory was divided among the twelve tribes. The Levites, including the priestly families descended from Aaron, didn't receive large tribal territories like the other tribes, but instead were given specific cities scattered throughout Israel. The Kohathites were one of the three main Levitical family groups, and Aaron's descendants within this family served as priests.
