Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
Tell the people of Israel to give the Levites some cities from their inherited land to live in. Also give the Levites the pasturelands around those cities.
God is instructing that the Levites, who serve as priests, should be given cities and surrounding lands to live in since they won't receive their own territory like the other tribes.
📚 Historical Context
The Levites were the priestly tribe of Israel who were dedicated to serving God in the tabernacle and later the temple. Unlike the other eleven tribes, they would not receive a large territorial inheritance when Israel settled in the Promised Land. Instead, they would be scattered throughout the land in designated cities to serve the spiritual needs of all the tribes.
