Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
Tell the people of Israel to give the Levites some cities from their inherited land to live in. Also give the Levites the pasturelands around those cities.
God is instructing that the Levites, who serve as priests, should be given cities and surrounding lands to live in since they won't receive their own territory like the other tribes.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Numbers, as the Israelites were preparing to settle in the Promised Land after their exodus from Egypt, the tribe of Levi was set apart for religious duties and did not receive a territorial inheritance like the other tribes. God instructed Moses to command the Israelites to allocate specific cities and surrounding pastures from their own lands to the Levites, ensuring they had places to live and resources for their families. This arrangement highlighted God's provision for those dedicated to sacred service, allowing the Levites to focus on worship and teaching without the burdens of land management.
