Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
From the Israelites' half of the spoils, Moses took one out of every fifty people and animals, and gave them to the Levites who were responsible for taking care of the LORD's tabernacle, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Moses followed God's command to give a portion of the war spoils to the Levites who served at God's tabernacle.
📚 Historical Context
This verse comes from the aftermath of Israel's war against the Midianites, where the spoils of war (including captives and livestock) were being distributed according to God's specific instructions. The Levites were the priestly tribe who had no inheritance of land but were supported by the other tribes through tithes and offerings since they devoted themselves to serving God at the tabernacle.
