And Moses took the redemption money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites:
So Moses collected the redemption money for those firstborn sons who exceeded the number of Levites available to take their place.
Moses collected payment money for the extra firstborn sons who couldn't be replaced by Levites in God's service.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Numbers, God instructed Moses to conduct a census of the Israelites and assign the Levites to serve in the tabernacle in place of the firstborn sons, whom God had originally claimed. When the count revealed more firstborn sons than Levites, God commanded that the excess be redeemed by paying a set amount of money to symbolically buy back those individuals. Moses carried out this collection as part of maintaining order and obedience to God's directives during the Israelites' wilderness journey.
