I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
I will strike them down with disease and remove them as my people, and I will make you into a nation that is greater and stronger than they are.
God is telling Moses that He wants to destroy the rebellious Israelites and start over by making Moses the father of a new, greater nation instead.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Numbers, the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt and had sent spies to scout the Promised Land. When the spies returned with a report emphasizing the giants and fortified cities, the people rebelled against God, refusing to trust His promise to give them the land. God, in His righteous anger, spoke to Moses about punishing the Israelites with pestilence and starting a new nation through Moses instead.
