And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
If God hadn't cut those terrible days short, literally no one would survive. But because of the people he's chosen, he made sure those dark times wouldn't last forever.
Even in the worst times, God limits how long the darkness lasts because he's got people to protect.
