For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
Anyone who does not humble themselves and fast on that day will be completely removed from their community.
God is saying that anyone who doesn't participate in the Day of Atonement by fasting and humbling themselves will be expelled from the community of God's people.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is part of the instructions for the Day of Atonement, an annual holy day in ancient Israel where the people were commanded to fast and repent for their sins as a way to seek God's forgiveness. On this day, the high priest would enter the Most Holy Place to make atonement for the nation's sins, emphasizing the seriousness of impurity before a holy God. Failure to participate in this required self-affliction, such as fasting, meant being cut off from the community, which signified exclusion from God's covenant people and their blessings.
