And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
So Joshua circumcised their children, whom God had raised up to take their parents' place. These children had not been circumcised because their parents hadn't circumcised them during their journey through the wilderness.
Joshua circumcised the new generation of Israelites because their parents hadn't performed this important ceremony during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness.
📚 Historical Context
This took place after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land. The previous generation that came out of Egypt had died in the wilderness due to their disobedience, and their children - now adults - had grown up without receiving circumcision, which was the sign of God's covenant with Abraham. Joshua performed this ceremony to restore the covenant relationship before they began conquering the land.
