For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
Just like the Father brings dead people back to life and gives them breath again, the Son does the same thing, he gives life to whoever he chooses to.
Jesus has the same power as God to literally bring people back from the dead.
📚 Historical Context
In the Gospel of John, Jesus is in Jerusalem and has just healed a man who had been ill for 38 years on the Sabbath, which provoked the Jewish leaders due to their strict observance of the law. Jesus responds by teaching about His relationship with God the Father, claiming that He shares the Father's power to give life, which was a bold assertion in a context where only God was seen as the source of life. This highlights the growing tension between Jesus and the religious authorities as He reveals His divine identity.
