And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
Right then, Jesus's disciples came back and were totally shocked to see him talking with this woman. But nobody had the nerve to ask him 'What do you want?' or 'Why are you even talking to her?'
Even Jesus's closest friends were surprised he broke social rules, but they trusted him enough not to question it.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of John 4, Jesus was traveling through Samaria and stopped at a well to speak with a Samaritan woman, which was unusual because Jews typically avoided Samaritans due to longstanding religious and cultural tensions. The disciples returned and were surprised to see Jesus talking with a woman alone, as societal norms in that era discouraged such interactions between men and women who were not related. Despite their amazement, they didn't question Jesus, showing their growing respect for his authority.
