Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
People will buy fields with money, sign legal documents, seal them, and call witnesses to make it official in the land of Benjamin, around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the mountain cities, in the valley cities, and in the southern cities. I will bring my people back from captivity, says the LORD.
God is promising that normal life will return to the land - people will buy and sell property again because He will bring His people back from exile.
📚 Historical Context
This prophecy came during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem around 586 BC, when the land was being destroyed and the people faced deportation to Babylon. Jeremiah had just purchased a field from his cousin as a symbolic act of faith in God's promise of restoration. At this dark moment when everything seemed hopeless, God was promising that everyday activities like real estate transactions would resume when the exiles returned.
