Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;
This is what the LORD says: Go and buy a clay jar from a potter, and bring some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests with you.
God is instructing Jeremiah to gather community leaders and get a clay jar as part of delivering an important message.
📚 Historical Context
In the 7th century BC, during the reign of King Josiah and the looming threat of Babylonian invasion, the prophet Jeremiah was commissioned by God to deliver warnings to the people of Judah about their persistent idolatry and moral decline. This verse marks the start of a dramatic prophetic act, where Jeremiah is instructed to obtain a potter's earthen bottle and involve the elders of the people and priests, symbolizing God's authority to shape and shatter nations as a potter does with clay. By targeting these leaders, the message aimed to confront the core of Judah's society and urge repentance before divine judgment.
