The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

This is the family record of Jesus Christ, who descended from King David and from Abraham. Abraham had a son named Isaac. Isaac had a son named Jacob. Ram had a son named Amminadab. Amminadab had a son named Nahshon. Nahshon had a son named Salmon. Salmon had a son named Boaz with a woman named Rahab. Boaz had a son named Obed with a woman named Ruth. Obed had a son named Jesse, and Jesse had a son named David, who became king. King David had a son named Solomon with the woman who had been married to Uriah. Solomon had a son named Rehoboam. Rehoboam had a son named Abijah, and Abijah had a son named Asa. Asa had a son named Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat had a son named Joram, and Joram had a son named Uzziah. Uzziah had a son named Jotham. Jotham had a son named Ahaz, and Ahaz had a son named Hezekiah. Hezekiah had a son named Manasseh. Manasseh had a son named Amon, and Amon had a son named Josiah. Josiah had sons, including Jeconiah and his brothers, who lived during the time when the people were taken away as prisoners to Babylon. After the people were taken to Babylon, Jeconiah had a son named Shealtiel. Shealtiel had a son named Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel had a son named Abiud. Abiud had a son named Eliakim, and Eliakim had a son named Azor. Azor had a son named Zadok. Zadok had a son named Achim, and Achim had a son named Eliud. Eliud had a son named Eleazar. So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen generations from David to the time when the people were taken to Babylon, and fourteen generations from that time to the birth of Christ.

Matthew 1:18-25

The Birth of Jesus Christ

Here is how Jesus Christ was born. His mother Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before their wedding, before they had come together as husband and wife, Mary became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a good and righteous man. When he discovered that Mary was going to have a baby, he did not want to bring shame on her in front of everyone. So he decided he would quietly break off their engagement and divorce her without making it public. But while Joseph was thinking about all this, an angel of the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The baby she is carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you must name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All of this happened so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet long ago would come true. The prophet had said, "Look, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel," which means "God with us." When Joseph woke up from his dream, he did exactly what the angel of the Lord had told him to do. He took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until after she gave birth to her son. And Joseph named the baby Jesus, just as the angel had commanded.
