And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
And the LORD went ahead of them during the day in a tall column of cloud to show them which way to go, and at night in a column of fire to give them light, so they could travel both day and night.
God personally guided the Israelites on their journey through the wilderness, providing visible direction during the day with a cloud and light at night with fire.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had just been freed from slavery in Egypt through God's miraculous plagues, and they were beginning their journey through the harsh wilderness toward the Promised Land. This pillar of cloud by day and fire by night served as a visible sign of God's presence, guiding them, protecting them from enemies, and providing direction in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment. It demonstrated God's faithfulness in leading His people step by step during their exodus.
