This psalm was written after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC, taking the Jewish people into exile. The Edomites were descendants of Esau (Jacob's brother) who lived southeast of Israel and had a long history of conflict with the Israelites. Instead of helping their distant relatives during this catastrophe, the Edomites actually cheered on the Babylonians and may have participated in the destruction.
