This psalm was written by David when he was fleeing from his son Absalom, who had rebelled against him and was trying to take over the kingdom. David had to escape Jerusalem quickly as Absalom gathered supporters and threatened his life. This was one of the darkest periods in David's reign, when even his own family turned against him.
