David wrote this psalm drawing from his experience as a shepherd boy, where he learned that good shepherds lead their flocks to the best grazing areas and safest water sources. In the Middle Eastern climate, finding green pastures and still (safe) waters was essential for the sheep's survival and health. This imagery would have been deeply meaningful to an agricultural society that understood the intimate relationship between shepherds and their flocks.
