In ancient times, merchants used physical weights and balance scales to measure goods for trade. Some dishonest traders would keep two sets of weights - lighter ones when buying from others and heavier ones when selling - to cheat their customers. This was a common form of fraud that hurt the poor and vulnerable especially.
