This census was taken near the end of Israel's 40 years in the wilderness, just before they entered the Promised Land. It was the second major census recorded in Numbers, meant to count the fighting men and organize the tribes for both military purposes and land distribution. Benjamin was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Jacob's youngest son.
