This follows the plague described in Numbers 25 that killed 24,000 Israelites due to their worship of foreign gods and immoral behavior with Moabite women. Aaron had died earlier (Numbers 20:28), so his son Eleazar had become the new high priest. The Israelites were still in the wilderness, nearing the end of their 40-year journey toward the Promised Land.
