This prophecy was spoken by Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet hired by the Moabite king Balak to curse Israel around 1400 BC. The Amalekites were descendants of Esau and had been Israel's first enemy after leaving Egypt, attacking them from behind during their wilderness journey. They were known as a fierce, nomadic warrior people who controlled important trade routes.
