This judgment came after the Israelites refused to enter the Promised Land following the negative report from ten of the twelve spies. Despite seeing God's miracles in Egypt and the wilderness, they chose to believe the fearful report rather than trust God's promise. God sentenced that entire generation (except Joshua and Caleb) to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until they died.
