The Kohathites were one of three main divisions of the Levite tribe, descended from Kohath (one of Levi's sons). During Israel's wilderness wanderings, the Levites were given the sacred responsibility of caring for the tabernacle and its furnishings. The Kohathites specifically were tasked with carrying the most holy items of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, when the Israelites moved from place to place.
