This census took place near the end of Israel's 40-year wilderness journey, as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. Moses was counting all men aged 20 and older who could serve in the military. This was the second major census - the first was taken shortly after leaving Egypt, and this one showed how the population had changed over nearly four decades in the wilderness.
