In the book of Numbers, the Israelites were encamped near the Moabites and began to worship their gods while engaging in immorality, which provoked God's anger and led to a devastating plague among the people. Phinehas, a priest and grandson of Aaron, demonstrated zeal for God's holiness by killing an Israelite man and a Midianite woman who were openly defying His commands, which halted the plague. As a reward for his faithfulness, God established a covenant of peace with Phinehas and his descendants.
