In the book of Numbers, the Israelites were journeying through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt, and they had become a formidable presence that alarmed surrounding nations. Balak, the king of Moab, hired Balaam, a prophet from a non-Israelite background, to curse the Israelites in an attempt to stop their advance. God appeared to Balaam at night, granting permission to go with the messengers but strictly commanding him to only speak the words God would provide.
