In the book of Numbers, the Israelites had been delivered from slavery in Egypt and were journeying toward the Promised Land under Moses' leadership. They sent twelve spies to scout Canaan for forty days, but the spies' negative report about the inhabitants led the people to doubt God's ability to fulfill His promises and rebel against Him. As a result, God pronounced a judgment that the entire generation would wander in the wilderness for forty years, one year for each day of the spies' exploration, to teach them the consequences of their unbelief.
