This verse is part of Nehemiah's secret nighttime survey of Jerusalem's walls in 445 BC, after he had returned from Babylon with permission to rebuild the city. The walls had been destroyed by the Babylonians about 140 years earlier, and the rubble and debris had accumulated to such an extent that normal passage was impossible in many areas.
