This verse is part of the dedication ceremony for Jerusalem's newly rebuilt walls under Nehemiah's leadership around 445 BC. Two processional groups walked in opposite directions around the city walls, singing and giving thanks to God for protecting them during the rebuilding project. The various gates and towers mentioned were key defensive and commercial points that had been carefully restored after the Babylonian destruction.
