Jesus was responding to a Pharisee who asked him which commandment in the Law was the greatest, likely trying to trap him in a theological debate. In Jewish tradition, rabbis often ranked the 613 commandments in the Torah by importance. Jesus had just quoted the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:5 about loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
