In the days leading up to His crucifixion, Jesus was in Bethany where a woman anointed Him with expensive perfume as an act of devotion. This gesture was criticized by some of His followers as wasteful, but Jesus defended her, explaining that it was a preparation for His burial. He then declared that her deed would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached as a lasting memorial.
