But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
In the time of Jesus, the Pharisees were religious leaders in ancient Israel who strictly observed Jewish laws, including tithing even the smallest items like mint and rue to demonstrate their piety. However, Jesus criticized them for focusing on these external rituals while neglecting deeper spiritual obligations such as practicing justice and showing genuine love for God. This rebuke was part of Jesus' public teachings in the Gospels, where he often challenged the hypocrisy of religious authorities during his ministry in first-century Judea.
