In the Gospel of Luke, this verse occurs in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, shortly before Jesus' arrest by the religious leaders and Roman authorities. Jesus had withdrawn to pray intensely about the suffering he was about to face, after urging his disciples to stay awake and pray with him. The disciples, exhausted from the emotional weight of Jesus' predictions of his betrayal and death, fell asleep despite his instructions.
