And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.
This verse is part of God's instructions for the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths), one of three major festivals that all Israelite men were required to attend in Jerusalem. The festival commemorated God's provision during the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. The branches were used to build temporary shelters and were waved as part of the celebration, reminding the people of God's faithfulness and provision.
