This verse comes at the end of Gideon's story as a judge of Israel. After defeating the Midianites and refusing the people's offer to make him king, Gideon returned to his hometown of Ophrah. Jerubbaal was another name for Gideon, given to him when he destroyed his father's altar to Baal.
