In the book of Judges, Israel was oppressed by the Midianites, and God raised up Gideon as a judge to deliver them from this enemy. God had already instructed Gideon to reduce his army to just 300 men to show that victory depends on divine power, not human strength. In Judges 7:11, God directs Gideon to eavesdrop on the Midianite camp to hear something that will encourage and strengthen him before the battle.
