Jephthah was one of Israel's judges during the period before they had kings, roughly 1200-1000 BC. He had delivered Israel from the Ammonites but was also known for making a tragic vow that cost his daughter's life. Gilead was a region east of the Jordan River where Jephthah was from and where he returned to be buried.
